Tiny Telemetry

The go-to for testing telemetry pipelines is the OpenTelemetry project’s OTel Demo which is a webshop with mocked users generating visits, add-to-baskets, orders, checkouts and errors.

It’s excellent for testing telemetry pipelines and setups, especially when everything needs to be coherent - complete traces that look like a real user etc.

When all you need is some data coming through, it’s frankly ginormous - several containers, written in different languages, using loads of compute.

I looked for a smaller option and, when I didn’t find one, I made the smallest thing I easily could:

Tiny Telemetry

This is a small container that just sits there emitting logs, metrics and traces. No attempt is made for these to make any sense - this is for testing the completeness of pipelines, rather than any visualisations.

There are examples for deploying this to k8s, docker-compose and ECS, but it is a single container so should be easy to put anywhere else.
